Rumour: GTA 6 Allegedly Locks To 30 FPS, 60 FPS Mode Unclear

We’ve been digging into the frame-rate chatter around GTA 6 after fresh reporting surfaced that directly questions whether Rockstar will ship the game with a higher-frame-rate Performance mode. The short version: Rockstar North personnel have allegedly told outlets the game runs at 30 FPS for now, and whether a 60 FPS option will exist “at launch (or in the future)” remains uncertain, per the reporting.

What Was Reported

According to Eurogamer, Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson told Portuguese outlet Flow Games reporter Davy Jones (as relayed via GamesRadar+) that performance “for now, is 30 FPS.” Flow Games is quoted (translated via Google) saying: "According to the director, it is still necessary to consult the technical team to determine if there will be a 60 FPS option at launch (or in the future)." The translation also notes Nelson “does not currently have details on resolution and other technical qualities, such as the use of Ray Tracing.”

Eurogamer later updated with a note that performance analysis outlet Digital Foundry has scrutinised the latest extended trailer and concluded, on the evidence of that asset, the game looks to be running natively at 1440p on PS5 and "maintains a relatively stable and well-paced 30 FPS output with only very occasional single frame drops." Digital Foundry also flagged that the downloadable trailer is “a 30 FPS asset,” which could hide additional frame drops that aren’t visible inside that capture.

The Source & Credibility

We’re relaying what Eurogamer has reported, which in turn cites Flow Games’ translation of comments from Rob Nelson. The chain of attribution matters: the 30 FPS claim is directly ascribed to a Rockstar studio head, while the caveat about a possible 60 FPS option is framed as something that requires consulting the technical team.

Who Said What

  • Rob Nelson (co-studio head at Rockstar North): performance “for now, is 30 FPS” and he reportedly lacks current details on resolution and Ray Tracing.
  • Flow Games / Davy Jones: relayed and translated Nelson’s remarks.
  • Digital Foundry: after analysing the downloadable trailer, suggested native 1440p on PS5 and a “relatively stable and well-paced 30 FPS output,” while warning the trailer being a “30 FPS asset” could hide further drops.

Take this with a pinch of salt: translations, secondhand quotes and captured assets are all imperfect. Eurogamer also says they have contacted Rockstar for clarification, which emphasises the provisional nature of these claims.

What It Could Mean

If true, an initial baseline of 30 FPS on current-generation consoles would align with how previous Grand Theft Auto releases targeted performance: the reporting even reminds readers that GTA 5 originally ran at 30 FPS on base PlayStation and Xbox hardware in earlier console generations. That historical point is in the reporting, and it’s one reason some readers aren’t entirely surprised by a 30 FPS target.

That said, uncertainty over a 60 FPS Performance mode matters because optional Performance and Quality modes have become common in recent games — and developers have responded to community pressure in the past. Eurogamer points to an example where Rebel Wolves added a last-minute 60 FPS Performance mode to The Blood of Dawnwalker after backlash to a lower FPS target.
