GTA 6 Map Size: How Big Are Leonida and Vice City?

Grand Theft Auto VI is taking players back to Vice City, but Rockstar Games is building far more than a modern version of its famous Miami-inspired setting.

The game is set across the fictional state of Leonida, with Vice City at its centre and a wider world that includes tropical islands, wetlands, industrial areas, small towns and countryside. Rockstar has confirmed that GTA 6 will be the “biggest, most immersive evolution” of the Grand Theft Auto series — but it has not revealed an official map size in square miles or kilometres.

That has left fans trying to calculate the size of Leonida from trailers, screenshots and community mapping projects. Some estimates place it at roughly 1.5 to two times the size of GTA V’s San Andreas, while others suggest an even bigger world. At this stage, though, every precise figure remains an estimate rather than a confirmed Rockstar fact.

How big is the GTA 6 map?

Rockstar has not confirmed the exact size of the GTA 6 map.

There is no official square-kilometre figure, no full in-game map and no final measurement for Leonida. Rockstar has instead focused on the scale and variety of the world, describing GTA 6 as the series’ biggest and most immersive evolution yet.

“Grand Theft Auto VI heads to the state of Leonida, home to the neon-soaked streets of Vice City and beyond in the biggest, most immersive evolution of the Grand Theft Auto series yet.” — Rockstar Games

The important word is “beyond.” GTA 6 is not simply a remake or expansion of the original 2002 Vice City map. It is a new, present-day Vice City inside a much larger Florida-inspired state.

GTA 6 map size estimates explained

The most commonly repeated fan estimate is that Leonida could be around 1.5 to two times larger than GTA V’s map. Other analyses go further, but these calculations are based on trailer shots, promotional images, apparent road layouts and attempts to match distances using Rockstar’s engine coordinates.

That work is interesting, particularly because community mapping projects have often identified locations before a Rockstar game’s release. But it is still not the same as a finished map supplied by Rockstar.

A map can also feel much bigger without simply having more empty land. Density matters. More enterable buildings, busier streets, more interiors, waterways, wildlife, side activities and distinct environments can make a world feel far larger than its raw square-mileage figure suggests.

This is likely where GTA 6 could make its biggest leap. Rockstar has shown dense urban nightlife, coastal communities, highways, swamps, boats, rural roads and industrial spaces — all within one state. Even if the final landmass is not dramatically larger than every fan estimate, Leonida could be the most varied GTA world yet.

Leonida: GTA 6’s fictional version of Florida

Leonida appears to be Rockstar’s fictional interpretation of Florida, just as San Andreas reimagined California and Los Santos reimagined Los Angeles.

The setting gives Rockstar room to combine several different environments in one game. Players can move from Vice City’s neon streets and beaches to wetland regions, island chains and more remote countryside without leaving the state.

Rockstar’s official GTA VI site describes Jason and Lucia’s story as stretching across the state of Leonida. Trailer 2 and Rockstar’s location pages have also revealed more of the places players will explore.

Vice City: the main urban hub

Vice City is the headline location in GTA 6. It returns in a modern-day form rather than the 1980s setting seen in the original Grand Theft Auto: Vice City.

Rockstar’s promotional material shows high-rise buildings, beaches, nightlife, luxury homes, busy roads, clubs, social-media culture and an enormous amount of activity across the city. It is clearly intended to be Leonida’s major urban centre and the place most closely associated with Jason and Lucia’s criminal story.

However, GTA 6 is not called “Vice City 2” for a reason. The city is only one part of a larger state, with the game designed to offer a broader sense of travel and regional variety than the original.

The Leonida Keys

The Leonida Keys are Rockstar’s version of the Florida Keys: a chain of tropical islands connected by roads, water and small communities.

This region looks likely to be important for boating, smuggling, fishing, tourism and ocean-based exploration. Rockstar’s official character material introduces Brian Heder as a longtime drug runner operating around the Keys, suggesting this part of the map will not just be a scenic detour.

The Keys could also give GTA 6 one of its biggest advantages over GTA V: a much stronger connection between land travel and water travel. Boats, beaches, marinas, islands and coastal crime all fit naturally into the setting.

Grassrivers: the wetlands

Grassrivers appears to be Leonida’s swamp and wetland region, inspired by the Florida Everglades.

It is likely to offer a sharp contrast to Vice City’s bright lights and urban density. Rockstar has shown marshland, wildlife, airboats and more remote terrain, suggesting Grassrivers may be one of the map’s most atmospheric areas.

For players, it could become a place for off-road driving, boating, hunting-style activities, hidden locations and missions that take advantage of the difficult landscape. It also helps make Leonida feel like a state rather than a city surrounded by generic countryside.

Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia and Mount Kalaga

Rockstar has also introduced three more distinct areas: Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia and Mount Kalaga.

Port Gellhorn looks like a faded coastal destination, with motels, tourist businesses and a rougher atmosphere than Vice City’s glamorous beachfront districts. It could provide a more run-down, small-town version of Florida life.

Ambrosia appears to be a more industrial and agricultural area, with factories, working communities and a different type of economy from the tourist-heavy coast.

Mount Kalaga is the most remote-looking region Rockstar has shown so far. It appears to represent wilderness, forest and higher ground, giving the game a rural space that is very different from the beaches and swamps elsewhere in Leonida.

Together, these locations make it clear that Rockstar is chasing variety as much as scale.

GTA 6 map vs GTA 5 map

GTA V’s San Andreas map combined Los Santos, Blaine County, mountains, desert, countryside and ocean. It remains one of the most recognisable open worlds in gaming.

GTA 6 appears to follow that same “city plus wider state” structure, but with a Florida-inspired identity. Rather than a huge dry desert region, Leonida focuses on coastline, wetlands, tropical islands, rural communities and a much denser central city.

Feature GTA V GTA 6
Main city Los Santos Vice City
Wider setting San Andreas Leonida
Major landscape types City, desert, mountains, countryside City, beaches, islands, wetlands, countryside, industrial areas
Official map-size measurement No formal Rockstar figure No formal Rockstar figure
Release status Available now Launching November 19, 2026

The comparison should not only be about which map has more square miles. GTA 6 may feel larger because it has more distinct places to visit, more detailed environments and a world built around modern technology and activity.

Will GTA 6’s map expand after launch?

Rockstar has not confirmed map expansions, new states or additional cities after launch.

It is easy to see why fans expect GTA 6 Online to grow over time, especially after the long-term success of GTA Online. But there is currently no official statement confirming that Leonida will receive a second state, extra islands or future map areas.

Any claims about future locations should therefore be treated as speculation until Rockstar announces them.

GTA 6 map size: the verdict

The exact size of GTA 6’s map is still unknown. Rockstar has not published the final dimensions of Leonida, and the most popular size estimates are fan calculations rather than official information.

What is confirmed is more exciting than a single number: GTA 6 includes modern-day Vice City and a broader state featuring the Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia and Mount Kalaga. It is designed to be the biggest and most immersive Grand Theft Auto world Rockstar has made.

GTA 6 launches on November 19, 2026 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. For more on the financial scale behind the game, read our GTA 6 budget guide, and see our breakdown of whether the GTA 6 release date is safe.
