Report: Resident Evil: Requiem Allegedly Earned More On PS Discs Than All Xbox Sales

We’re digging into some striking physical-sales figures that, if true, suggest Resident Evil: Requiem performed unusually strongly on PlayStation discs compared to Xbox. Per Eurogamer, data pulled together by Alinea Analytics analyst Rhys Elliott paints a picture where disc sales still matter — especially on PlayStation and in Japan — even as companies push toward a digital future.

What Was Reported

According to Eurogamer, Elliott’s newsletter estimates that Resident Evil: Requiem sold 1.3 million physical copies. That figure is said to represent 15 percent of the game's total revenue and 30.2 percent of its revenue on PlayStation.

Most eye-catching is the claim that physical copies “made 1.8x more revenue on PlayStation than it made from all copies sold — digital and physical — on Xbox,” per the same breakdown. Take this with a pinch of salt, but if accurate it would mean PlayStation disc sales alone out-earned all Xbox sales for this title.

Other Numbers Elliott Highlighted

  • Wolverine reportedly owes 800,000 of its 2.6m sales to physical copies, and nearly a third of its revenue to those discs.
  • Physical sales for 007 First Light, Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced, and Crimson Desert are all said to be under 30 percent of their totals, making physical a minority but still a meaningful chunk.
  • Sports titles look very different: PlayStation’s top seller, FC 27, allegedly owes only 8.9 percent of its sales to physical copies.
  • Japan is flagged as a physical-leaning market: Pragmata is listed at 44 percent physical, and Onimusha: Way of the Sword at 44.1 percent. Japan accounted for 12 percent of Onimusha’s sales and 11 percent of Pragmata’s, which Elliott says helps push global physical proportions up.
  • Hardware moves are noted too: a new, digital-only and Japan-exclusive PS5 Black launched in Japan for $350, with a separate disc drive sold for $75. Elliott interprets that packaging as a nudge toward digital purchases.
