Left 4 Dead 2 is one of the best shooters of its kind. It’s another crowning achievement from Valve, the studio that appears unable to create a truly bad game. Taking all of the things that worked in the original Left 4 Dead and dropping mechanics that didn’t quite feel right, Left 4 Dead 2 adds a number of new enemies, new characters, and new scenarios to take on. What’s more, if you pick up the DLC for the game, you can add the entire campaign from the original game onto the sequel, plus lots of other extras. It’s an embarrassment of riches, and you can buy it for very little these days.

Of course, one question that’s hanging over the game is this: can you play Left 4 Dead 2 on Xbox One? Happily, the answer is a very simple and straightforward one: yes, you can. There are a few hoops to jump through if you’re looking to play the game digitally, but by and large, Left 4 Dead 2 is fully compatible across all Xbox devices. Here’s our guide on how you can enjoy this excellent zombie shooter on your Xbox One.

All you need to do if you want to play Left 4 Dead 2 on Xbox One is buy the game via the Xbox Marketplace. You might need to visit the Xbox 360 version of the storefront if you want to pick up the game afresh; it never got a re-release for Xbox One, so it’s still only available via the old-school Xbox marketplace. We’re able to access it in the UK, though; it’s available for £14.99, and you can buy additional content for it as well, although that will obviously raise the price.

Of course, the other obvious way that you can play Left 4 Dead 2 on Xbox One is to pop the disc into your console’s tray. The game is fully backwards compatible, so there’s really no reason that it shouldn’t work on your console. Of course, if your Xbox One doesn’t have a disc tray, then you won’t be able to play the physical version; unfortunately, owning a copy of the game doesn’t entitle you to play the digital edition as well, so you would need to buy it again in this instance.

Despite being over ten years old at this point, Left 4 Dead 2 is still a very active game on the Xbox ecosystem. It’s hard to believe, because the game isn’t available on any subscription services and is perhaps more widely enjoyed on PC, but it’s true. If you fire up Left 4 Dead 2 on Xbox One, there’s pretty much no chance you won’t be able to find a game quickly and get into some old-school zombie blasting. Rest assured that you won’t have any trouble playing Left 4 Dead 2 online, if that’s what you want.

If you’re not feeling the whole online scene, then you’ll be happy to learn that Left 4 Dead 2 supports couch co-op on Xbox One devices, as well as more modern consoles like the Xbox Series X|S. All you need to do is connect up two Xbox One controllers (unfortunately, Xbox 360 controllers aren’t supported on the Xbox One) and you’ll be playing in moments. The game doesn’t support more than two players on a couch co-op campaign, so you’ll be limited to just you and a single friend, unfortunately.

Although Left 4 Dead 2 will always run at its original 30fps cap on both Xbox 360 and Xbox One, if you want the best version of the game available, then play it on Xbox One X. This console adds resolution and performance enhancements to Left 4 Dead 2, making it run more smoothly and look much nicer. It’ll still run at the same frame rate, but that’s a small price to pay. For the best experience, play Left 4 Dead 2 on your Xbox One X and skip the One S or the original One.

If you’re an Xbox Game Pass subscriber, then we have some bad news for you: Left 4 Dead on Xbox Game Pass is still a figment of the imagination, for now at least. In fact, Valve’s games aren’t available on the service at all; you won’t find Half-Life, Team Fortress 2 (although that game is free-to-play) or Counter-Strike on Xbox Game Pass either. Valve hasn’t released Microsoft Store versions of these games, so they’re not available on the subscription service.

If you’re a Game Pass subscriber and you want to play something similar to Left 4 Dead, we’d recommend Back 4 Blood, which is available on Xbox Game Pass. Just like Left 4 Dead 2, it’s a co-op shooter you can enjoy with your friends, although it doesn’t feature split-screen multiplayer like Left 4 Dead does. Still, if you’ve got an Xbox One, you can enjoy Back 4 Blood at no additional cost to your regular Game Pass subscription, so give it a look if you want some fresh zombie-killing action.
