Well, it’s finally upon us. Yesterday, Sony unveiled the new PlayStation 5 console that we can expect to be eagerly unboxing sometime later this year. While we’ve already known about a lot of the console’s tech specs for some time now – the solid state drive, the controller’s haptic feedback triggers, the 3D audio functionality – yesterday was the first chance we got to take a look at the console’s hardware and some of its peripherals. We’ve had some time to mull over what we think of the new console and its lineup, and it’ll be no surprise to you to hear that we absolutely love it. Here are some of our first impressions on the new PlayStation 5.

It looks great

""

The PlayStation 5 has opted for a bold and striking visual approach. Rather than the Xbox Series X’s bland (in our opinion) “big black box” look, the PS5 has shot for the moon with a spiky space-age aesthetic that we think pays dividends. It’s a look strongly reminiscent of the DualSense controller’s white-and-black style, and now we understand why Sony opted for that style when designing its controller. It’s clear that the new PlayStation 5 is designed to stand tall and proud next to your TV, but don’t worry; if your setup simply won’t allow for that, the PS5 does also support horizontal positioning, so you won’t need to change too much around to accommodate it.

The peripherals are stunning

""

It’s not only the DualSense controller we can look forward to. The livestream yesterday also revealed a fair few new peripherals that will be compatible with the PlayStation 5, and they all look incredible. First, the stand that presumably comes with the console is multi-purpose; you’ll be able to use it to stand your console either vertically or horizontally. The official DualSense charging station is sleek and bold, just like the console itself. Sony is bringing a new Pulse 3D headset with the PlayStation 5, too, which will likely have the much-touted 3D audio feature built into it. Lastly, there’s a new HD camera and a Media Remote, both of which suit the PS5’s style perfectly.

Two different consoles

""

The PlayStation 5 will actually be on sale in two different iterations. The first is one which has a 4K Blu-ray drive built into it, so you’ll be able to play all your games and movies on traditional physical disc-based media. The second is an all-digital discless version. There’s no indication that the two consoles have any differences other than the disc drive; in fact, Sony says the gameplay experience “will be the same, so the choice is all yours”. We’re big fans of our Blu-ray collection and physical game collection here, so we know which one we’ll be going for, but there’s an undeniable attractiveness to the discless console, too.

The game lineup looks amazing

""

Sony absolutely knocked it out of the park in terms of the games it revealed it’s bringing to the PlayStation 5. Kicking off the show with Grand Theft Auto V, which will land on PS5 next year in a new enhanced version, Sony went on to line up a series of greatest franchise hits. Horizon: Forbidden West, Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart, Hitman 3, Resident Evil VIII…the list goes on and on. It’s hard to imagine anyone who thinks that Microsoft’s Xbox Series X gameplay reveal topped Sony’s incredible presentation yesterday. That’s not even mentioning Demon’s Souls, a remake of the lost cult classic from the days of the PlayStation 3. Colour us extremely excited.

That SSD is doing hard work

The demonstrations Sony showed off – all of which were captured on an actual PlayStation 5 console – were seriously impressive in terms of graphics tech. Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart showed its intrepid protagonists darting from dimension to dimension with nary a load time in between to slow things down. Housemarque’s intriguing roguelike shooter Returnal had particle effects and beautiful lighting flying everywhere to complement its innovative take on roguelike narrative. All of this is to say nothing of the incredible Horizon: Forbidden West, which absolutely dominated the presentation with its gorgeous, fluid open-world traversal.

Sony really cares about games

""

With Sony’s lineup showing yesterday, it became clear that Sony really cares about the games appearing on the PlayStation 5. The company gave nods to its heritage with titles like Hitman 3, Resident Evil VIII, and Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart, all of which promise to bring the hectic fun of their franchises into the next generation. Similarly, Sony gave hat-tips to some cool-looking indie games with the potential to become sleeper hits in and of themselves. While Microsoft’s presentation did have some highlights, it pales in comparison to Sony’s software-centric approach, and we love that about PS5. We’re already raring to go!

More info is coming

This isn’t all we’re learning about the PlayStation 5 and its ecosystem before the launch date. Sony promised to bring us more information about the amazing console and its features as we near the holiday season. It’s impossible to know exactly where we will be in terms of the coronavirus pandemic by then, but it would be absolutely wonderful if we could queue up for our console just as we’ve been doing since we were kids. The PlayStation 5 doubtless has many more incredible surprises up its sleeve, with that presentation being just the beginning. Here’s to many more years of gaming with Sony and its wondrous machines!
