GTA 6 on PS5 vs Xbox Series X: Will There Actually Be a Difference?

Grand Theft Auto 6 is coming to both PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, but Rockstar’s messaging has left some players asking a fair question: will one version actually be better?

The short answer is that there may be small differences, but nobody should expect GTA 6 to look or run dramatically better on a standard PS5 than on an Xbox Series X. Both consoles are the lead platforms for Rockstar’s biggest game yet, and the developer will want a broadly consistent experience across both.

GTA 6 is also expected to be one of the most expensive games ever made. Our breakdown of the GTA 6 budget helps explain why the game’s world, detail and technical ambition are generating such huge expectations.

There is one important exception: the PS5 Pro. If Rockstar releases a dedicated enhanced mode, Sony’s newer console is the most likely place to see a clearer visual advantage.

What Rockstar has confirmed

Rockstar has confirmed that GTA 6 is coming to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The official GTA 6 website also carries the message “Plays best on PlayStation 5”, linking to PlayStation’s GTA 6 page.

That wording suggests a marketing partnership with Sony. It does not, by itself, confirm an exclusive PS5 performance mode, earlier access, better frame rate, extra missions or content unavailable on Xbox.

Question What we know
Is GTA 6 coming to PS5? Yes
Is GTA 6 coming to Xbox Series X? Yes
Is GTA 6 coming to Xbox Series S? Yes
Is a PC version confirmed for launch? No
Does “Plays best on PS5” confirm better graphics? No
Is a PS5 Pro enhancement confirmed? Not yet
Are Xbox-exclusive compromises confirmed? No

For now, the most sensible reading is simple: PlayStation has a prominent marketing deal, while Rockstar continues to develop the game for the whole current-gen console family. Rockstar’s official GTA 6 page is still the best place to check when that changes.

PS5 vs Xbox Series X: the hardware difference is real, but modest

On paper, Xbox Series X has a little more graphics horsepower than the standard PS5. Microsoft says its console delivers more than 12 TFLOPS of GPU performance, alongside 16GB of GDDR6 memory and a custom NVMe SSD. Xbox’s technical breakdown also highlights its fast asset-streaming architecture.

That does not automatically make every multi-platform game better on Series X.

Modern console performance depends on much more than a single headline number: the game engine, memory use, CPU limits, ray tracing, resolution scaling and the time a studio spends optimising each platform all matter. GTA 6 is also expected to be extremely CPU-heavy, with dense traffic, crowds, physics, wildlife and a large open world.

Rockstar’s ambition goes beyond resolution and frame rate. The projected scale of Leonida and Vice City could be a major reason GTA 6 is so demanding on current consoles.

In a CPU-limited scene, extra GPU power may make little difference. The regular PS5 remains very capable, with its own high-speed SSD and custom architecture. In many major multi-platform releases, the standard PS5 and Xbox Series X versions have ended up close enough that most people would struggle to notice a difference without a side-by-side technical comparison.

The biggest GTA 6 difference may not be PS5 versus Xbox Series X. It may be standard consoles versus PS5 Pro.

Could GTA 6 run better on PS5 because of the marketing deal?

Possibly, but there is no evidence that it will.

A marketing partnership can mean trailer placement, PlayStation branding, special console bundles, advertising rights or a strong focus on DualSense controller features. It does not have to mean that Rockstar has deliberately made the Xbox version worse.

Sony may also promote GTA 6 as a showcase for the PS5’s DualSense controller. Haptic feedback and adaptive triggers could make shooting, driving, rain, surface changes and vehicle handling feel a little different on PlayStation. That would be an immersion feature, not necessarily a graphics or performance win.

Unless Rockstar publishes a detailed platform comparison, claims that GTA 6 has a locked 60fps mode on one standard console but not the other should be treated as speculation.

The PS5 Pro is the console to watch

PS5 Pro is where the conversation becomes more interesting. Sony says its upgraded system is designed for sharper AI-enhanced image quality through PSSR, advanced ray tracing and higher or more consistent frame rates in supported games. PlayStation’s PS5 Pro overview makes clear that enhancements vary by title and depend on developer support.

If GTA 6 receives a PS5 Pro patch or ships with PS5 Pro support, players could potentially see:

  • A cleaner 4K-style image through upscaling
  • Better reflections, shadows or ray-traced lighting
  • More stable performance in busy city scenes
  • A higher-resolution performance mode
  • Fewer visual compromises between quality and performance settings

However, this is the key point: none of those GTA 6 features have been confirmed by Rockstar yet.

A dedicated performance mode also remains unconfirmed, despite recent discussion around a possible GTA 6 60fps mode on Xbox Series X. Until Rockstar reveals final settings and technical targets, neither console should be treated as the guaranteed 60fps option.

It is also worth keeping expectations realistic. A stronger GPU does not necessarily solve a CPU bottleneck. If GTA 6’s large-scale simulation is what limits performance, PS5 Pro may improve image quality more than it improves the frame rate.

What about Xbox Series S?

Xbox Series S is the version most likely to make players nervous, simply because it is less powerful than both PS5 and Xbox Series X. Yet Rockstar has confirmed the game for Series S too.

That could mean lower internal resolution, reduced visual settings, fewer ray-tracing effects or a lower frame-rate target than the more powerful consoles. It does not mean the game will be a bad experience; it means Rockstar will need to scale the game intelligently.

The Series S version is also a reminder of why the standard PS5 versus Series X gap may be small. Rockstar has to build GTA 6 around a range of current-gen hardware, then optimise each version around its limits.

Will GTA 6 be 30fps or 60fps?

Rockstar has not announced a frame-rate target.

A 30fps quality-focused mode would not be surprising for a game attempting a huge, detailed open world with advanced lighting, dense city activity and ambitious simulation. A 60fps mode would be excellent, but it may require visual trade-offs — particularly on the regular PS5 and Xbox Series X.

The safest prediction is not to assume either outcome until Rockstar confirms it. Players should also be cautious around social-media clips claiming to show “leaked” performance modes, resolution figures or console comparisons. GTA 6 attracts more fake technical leaks than almost any other upcoming game.

So, which version should you buy?

For most people, the decision should come down to where their friends play, the controller they prefer and which ecosystem they already use.

If this matters most to you Best fit
Your friends, party chat and existing game library are on PlayStation PS5
Your friends, Game Pass setup and existing library are on Xbox Xbox Series X
You want the best chance of upgraded visuals at launch or later PS5 Pro, if Rockstar supports it
You want the lowest-cost current-gen entry point Xbox Series S, with likely visual compromises
You are choosing only because of the “Plays best on PS5” message Wait for independent comparisons

The standard PS5 and Xbox Series X should both deliver the GTA 6 experience Rockstar intends. Sony’s marketing partnership makes PlayStation look like the headline platform, but it does not currently prove that Xbox owners will receive an inferior game.

The more meaningful comparison may arrive after launch: standard PS5 versus PS5 Pro, particularly if Rockstar adds a dedicated enhanced mode.

Before choosing a platform or edition, it is also worth understanding why GTA 6 does not include a disc. Storage space, download time and the strength of your home internet connection could matter more than usual at launch.

Until then, the best advice is straightforward: buy GTA 6 on the console where you will enjoy the game with the people and library you already have.
