If there was every a fantasy world fit for a board game – populated by roving mammoths and leviathanic dragons – Skyrim is surely it.
On November 11, 2021, Elder Scrolls fans everywhere will celebrate the 10th anniversary of one of Bethesda’s most beloved titles. The fantasy RPG, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, saw players thrown into the blustery fray and set to free-roam a world filled with magical enemies and unexpected allies. The game itself is set for a special anniversary re-release, and, if that wasn’t enough to get you drawing iron swords again and climbing ice-capped mountains, there will also be a board game devoted to the vagaries of this far-reaching adventure.
Next summer, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim – The Adventure Game, will be released by Modiphius Entertainment. In total, this tabletop RPG board game will feature no less than 12 action-packed hours of immersive story content. There are two main narrative campaigns and each one is three chapters in length. A chapter consists of up to 120 minutes of gameplay. As you’d expect, that golden path is also the quickest route through the game and countless other unique story arcs branch in different directions, offering hours of character roleplay and changes to adapt to varying play styles. So, you can rest assured playtime will expand in many instances and stretch out your experience into the realms of a heady tabletop odyssey (snackers: be advised…).
In a recent press release, the creators stated: “This new solo/cooperative (up to four players) game of adventure and exploration invites aspiring adventurers to return to the frost-covered lands of Skyrim. Take up arms against dragons, Daedra, trolls, and many more wretched creatures…”
Players can choose from one of six races (Nord, Dunmer, Imperial, Altmer, Khajiit and Orismer) with detailed plastic miniatures befitting the beardy craftspeople behind Games Workshop. Throughout the game, you will have options to equip weapons, armour, spells and magical items, roaming familiar Skyrim locations, from Riften to Whiterun. Together, you will assume your roles as surviving warriors of the Blades, sworn in to protect the Empire of Tamriel.
The game is described as containing an ever-present element of danger. Tread carefully, expect surprises and ensure every member of your party has each other’s backs.
The Skyrim board game is available for pre-order via Gamefound and costs roughly £68 for which players will receive the base game. There is also the option to pay extra for additional expansions, special tokens and add-on miniatures. All pre-orders will be fulfilled in the summer of 2022.
