Video games are a popular technology-based form of entertainment. Sales are one of the important metrics that show how good a video game is and how influential it has been over time.  In this article, we’ll take a close look at ten of the best-selling games of all time.

 

Minecraft

Since its release in 2011, this sandbox video game has sold more than 200 million copies worldwide. This makes Minecraft the best-selling game to date. Minecraft was developed by the Swedish game studio Mojang, and it allows the player to construct 3D worlds with different blocks. You can then explore and craft various items within your newly created world. In 2014, an Xbox One version of this game was released. In 2016, it made the list of highest-grossing games for the console.

 

Grand Theft Auto V

Within a day of its release, this action-adventure game generated over 815 million US dollars worldwide. Three days after its release, Grand Theft Auto V had surpassed  $1 billion in sales, which made it the fastest-selling game and entertainment product in history. Grand Theft Auto V has managed to sell 140 million copies since it was released. It’s the best-selling video game of all time to be released on PS 4. In the UK, GTA V became the fastest-selling game in history, selling over a whopping 2.25 million copies in just 5 days. The game sold 1.57 million copies on its first day of release in the UK, generating 65 million pounds.

 

Wii Sports

Wii Sports is the best-selling video game on a single platform; it sold more than 82 million copies on the Wii console platform. Developed and published by Nintendo, this sports simulation game sold more than 176, 000 copies in Japan in its first two days of release. The game includes five sports: boxing, golf, bowling, baseball, and tennis. In the game, the player uses the Wii Remote (Wiimote) to mimic actions in real-life sports.

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds

Also known as PUBG, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is a PvP (player versus player) shooter video game that allows up to 100 players to fight in a battle royale. PUBG has sold 70 million copies to date. In 2017, this title was the best-selling premium game after selling 30 million copies and grossing around $900 million. In the first 3 days of PUBG’s Windows early access, the game made $11 million.

 

Super Mario Bros

This platform game was published and developed by Nintendo. Super Mario Bros sold over 50 million copies worldwide, and it’s considered among the greatest games of all time. The game features 8 worlds with 4 sub-levels known as Stages in each world. Players assume the role of Mario, who is the protagonist of the game series. The second player controls Luigi, Mario’s younger brother, in the multiplayer mode. The objective of this game is to save Princess Toadstool.

 

Pokémon Red/Green /Blue/Yellow

At launch, the era-defining game in Japan used to be available in two versions (Green and Red) before coming to other areas as Pokemon Red and Blue. The Special Pikachu Edition (Yellow Version) followed from 1998-2000, depending on the territory. Pokémon Red and Blue version set the model for what came to become a blockbuster and multibillion-dollar franchise. In 1996, Blue, Green, and Red sold a total of 1.04 million units in Japan and another 3.65 million the following year. To date, the Pokémon video game series combined have sold 47,520,000 copies.

Mario Kart 8 / Deluxe

Mario Kart 8, a kart racing game, was published and developed by Nintendo. In April 2017, an enhanced version of this game (Mario Kart 8 Deluxe) was released for the Nintendo Switch. Shortly after the launch of this game in the UK, week-on-week Wii U console sales rose by 662% in the country. Mario Kart 8 bundles accounted for 82% of the units that were sold. In the first four days of its release, the game became the world’s fastest-selling Wii U video game after selling 1.2 million copies. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe was also among the best-selling video games of 2017 on Amazon. The two versions have sold more than 43 million copies to date.

Wii Fit/ Plus

Wii Fit Plus, an exergaming game, was published and developed by Nintendo. Wii Fit Plus is the enhanced version of the 2007 game Wii Fit. With 21.13 million copies sold, Wii Fit Plus is the 7th best-selling video game on the Wii. Wii Fit, on the other hand, was the 3rd best-selling console game that’s not packaged with a console after selling 22.67 million copies by March 2012. The two versions have sold a total of 43,840,000 copies to date.

 

Red Dead Redemption 2

This action-adventure game was published and developed by the American studio Rockstar Games. It’s the third installment in the Red Dead series. The game had the largest opening weekend when it comes to the history of entertainment after making $725 million in just three days. It also shipped more than 17 million copies in two weeks. What’s more? This game is the 2nd highest-grossing entertainment launch and has set records for the largest first-day sales, largest-ever pre-orders, and largest sales ever made for the first 3 days in the market on PSN (PlayStation Network). Red Dead Redemption 2 has sold 36 million copies worldwide since it was released in October 2018.

 

Tetris

This tile-matching game was created by Alexey Leonidovich Pajitnov and published by several companies. It has been released on numerous platforms and is available on most video game consoles. The Tetris franchise had sold over 170 million copies worldwide. This includes 70 million physical copies as well as more than 100 million copies for mobile phones. Tetris has also sold more than 130 million paid mobile game downloads.
